Pro Traveler Tips

Book a sunset table on Jimbaran beach early, especially on weekends. The best restaurants fill quickly, and arriving before sunset gives time to choose seafood and watch the sky change.

Watch the Kecak dance at Uluwatu, but arrive early to buy tickets and secure a seat with an ocean view. Keep glasses, hats and phones out of reach of the temple monkeys.

Use the Bali Mandara toll road when heading to the airport or Sanur. It saves considerable time compared with the bypass, especially in the late afternoon.

Eat at local warungs for lunch. Nasi campur, babi guling and mie goreng cost very little, and Mak Jo Taman Griya nearby offers simple Indonesian dishes.

Dress respectfully at temples. Wearing a sarong and sash is required, and many temples lend them at the entrance. Shoulders should be covered.

Plan excursions to avoid peak traffic. Leaving early in the morning or travelling after rush hour can halve journey times in the south of Bali.

Book a massage at the hotel spa after a day of sightseeing. Balinese massage is inexpensive and relaxing, and the small spa offers personal service.

Carry cash in Indonesian rupiah for warungs, parking attendants and markets. ATMs are common, but choosing machines inside banks or supermarkets reduces the risk of card skimming.

Pay the Bali tourist levy online before arrival to avoid queues at the airport. Keep the confirmation on your phone, as checks occur at various points.
